LORAIN, OHIO (December 12, 2017) – The Oberlin Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Lorain City Schools District, is excited to present its second Showcase Event for the Lorain City Schools Arts Academy. A unique, collaborative program that unites Oberlin-based community arts organizations, Oberlin College students, Lorain City School students and teachers, and the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain will take place on Thursday, December 14, at Lorain High School Performing Arts Center. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. with the free program beginning at 5:30 p.m.
“Collaboration is something routinely referenced but often difficult to realize and make work,” said Darren T. Hamm, Executive Director of the Oberlin Center for the Arts. “This degree partnership among organizations and with the school district allows us to provide quality art education to students who will ultimately stand to benefit.”
For the past 12 weeks, students have participated three-days a week in the after-school program at Frank Jacinto Elementary School. Students worked side-by-side with teaching artists in five areas: choral music, drama, instrumental music, dance and visual arts. From learning to sing to creating various visual works of art, students have been immersed in and inspired by the wonders of artistic exploration and expression and are excited to showcase their work to the community.
“This has been a great collaborative effort,” said Dr. Stephen Sturgill, Assistant Superintendent of the Lorain City Schools. “Our community comes together in a lot of ways for our students, and this program takes that cooperation to a new level through after school programming. We are very proud of what our schools, Oberlin Center of the Arts and Boys and Girls Club have created to provide exceptional arts programming to our students.”
Born out of a generous investment by The Nord Family Foundation, the Oberlin Center for the Arts’ mission is to cultivate lifelong creativity and advocate for broad community engagement in quality arts programming and activities. The Arts Academy is the pioneer program of this collaborative organization.
